The Kitchen: The Heart of the Home

Cherry Custom Kitchen

The kitchen is commonly referred to as the “heart of the home” and with it being Valentine’s Day today, it seemed like a good time to take a look at why that is.

We’ll start by taking a look at the evolution of the kitchen. Until the late 18th century cooking was done over open flame. While specific kitchen design varies by country, climate, and wealth much of it centers on how the food was prepared. In many places food was cooked in a common outdoor space or separate building. This was largely due to the fact that smoke was produced and it wasn’t safe or practical to have it connected with the rest of the living spaces. The iron stove didn’t come about until the early 1800s. Even once stoves were more commonly available, venting was still an issue, so kitchens were built as separate spaces.

In the 1940s small kitchen appliances became the rage, as toasters and blenders became commonplace on countertops. In the 1950s meals were primarily made from scratch, and women were doing the majority of the cooking. In the 1970s women increasingly worked outside the home and frozen meals became popular and the kitchen was used less and less for meal preparation. Then in the 1980s the extractor or exhaust hood was perfected. This meant the smoke and smell from cooking food could be removed from the air. This was a game-changer in terms of design possibilities. It meant the kitchen could be online casinos open to the rest of the house.

The kitchen and those in it were no longer relegated to being isolated. It changed how food prep was perceived – less like work and more like entertainment, hence the popularity of the Food Network. Cooking shows, gadgets, celebrity chefs, and the like all are plentiful in this modern age of the kitchen. And why not? The kitchen is likely the most used room of the house. It is a place to store, prepare, and eat food, but it can also be a place to study, socialize, and show off. Yes, show off, a well-equipped and well-designed kitchen hints at your food prep prowess and your affluence.

The easy to take for granted modern conveniences such as gas lines, fresh tap water, and exhaust systems have made cooking easier and more enjoyable than ever before. Regardless of your cooking skills or budget, a well-designed kitchen can serve a multitude of purposes, including being the heart of the home.

Organized Spaces

It is a brand new year, a fresh start that often brings lots of well-meaning intentions to get organized. There are countless tips, books, and professionals to help you get organized spaces. So many in fact, that even deciding what advice to follow can be overwhelming.

Since I love organization I thought I would share my personal top 5 favorite organizational tips. These are five simple things you can do that may improve the function of your home too.

  1. Everything needs a place. Stock up on clear totes. Years ago I felt great about getting a bunch of colored totes, but they have caused frustration over the years and I have been transitioning to all clear totes. Despite my best efforts of keeping like items together, there always seems to be some items that fit into multiple categories – clear totes eliminate to need to remember. Also, stick with the same brand of totes to ensure they will stack on top one another.
  2. Recycle or file immediately. The mail comes in and anything that is considered “junk” is put into recycling on the spot. Bills have a special place on the desk and should there be anything “fun” in the mail that goes into a basket. Sorting the mail immediately is a simple step that takes only seconds, but doing so means there is never an over-whelming pile to wade through.
  3. Keep cleaning supplies in the bathroom. I used to keep a bucket of bathroom cleaning supplies in the basement, but it only came up when it was cleaning day. Now I keep glass cleaner, dusting spray, microfiber towels, and bleach wipes in each of the highly used bathrooms. That means when I have a spare moment and the toothpaste splatters on the mirror catch my eye I can quickly make them disappear without making any special trips or taking extra steps – and that means it gets done more often.
  4. Don’t buy anything that doesn’t fill a need or that you absolutely love and have a place for. Less is more. We tend to accumulate things. Things that we don’t really need or have space for and before we know if we have too much stuff collecting dust. Before buying something I ask myself, do I really need this/do I really love this? If I’m not sure, I don’t buy it. This is both budget friendly and clutter busting.
  5. Choose being present over being perfect. Home is a place to be lived in and enjoyed, and that means it may not look like a magazine photo. We all have demanding schedules these days and when you have time to spend with your family take it. It is better to enjoy play time with your kids than wage combat with dust bunnies.

Hopefully, these five tips can help you keep the new year feeling fresh throughout the months ahead.

Get Organized In The New Year!

This is the time of year you can”t help but take a few moments to look back at the year”s events. This year, like most, seemed to fly by. We have had a very busy year and the milestone event for our business has been moving into our new showroom. The space is still a work-in-progress, but it is certainly feeling more like home all the time.
Perhaps at no other time of year is our desire to change habits, get organized, and simplify stronger. The desire to simplify is a commonly searched topic and for obvious reasons. Our lives are busy and the things coming at us are abundant. We scoured the internet and found no shortage of tips and suggestions on how to simplify, but http://www.wisebread.com/25-ways-to-simplify-your-life-today from WiseBread stood out in the crowd.

While not all 25 items on their casino online list may hit home with you, several seem to be good steps to implement on the road to a simpler life. As a list maker, this idea also appeals to me: make a list of casino online the things you enjoy doing each week and a list of the things you don”t enjoy doing each week. Then examine if there are ways to increase the enjoyed items and decrease the disliked duties.

Regardless what approach to simplification you take, it is worth pursuing. We all seek to make the most of our time and too often let clutter, over-booked schedules, and the inability to say no get in the way of being intentional about how our days are spent.

Another idea to help deal with clutter is to tackle one shelf or drawer at a time, instead of worrying about the whole room.  Here’s where we’d start!

Junk Drawer Roll Out

Most of us have one. We don”t want to admit it and we surely don”t want anyone else to see it. The junk drawer. The dumping ground for all of the necessary and not so necessary little stuff that seems to accumulate, but have no official home.

What if your junk drawer wasn”t so junky? What if instead it was neat, clean, and organized. Everything in its place. Wouldn”t that be one small step toward feeling more organized overall? Here is our version of a roll out shelf we designed to help keep that clutter organized in the junk drawer.

We believe every bit of organization helps. Make 2014 your year to get organized or at least conquer the junk drawer!

Decorating your kitchen for Christmas!

Kitchen Decorating for Christmas

We hear all the time that the kitchen is the heart of the home. Then Christmas rolls around and we go all out decorating the family room. It gets all the oohs and aahs, but the kitchen still gets all the traffic. Decorating the kitchen for Christmas can be tricky. This is the time of year when many of us wish the kitchen was bigger, casinos online so you don’t want to add too much stuff that will get in the way of all the goodies and guests.

While looking for some inspiration to decorate my kitchen I ran across 31 ideas from Better Homes and Gardens. Seriously, all 31 ideas had me saying “oh cool, why didn’t I think of that!” Surely they have some pretty tablescape ideas that incorporate unexpected kitchen items, but some of the ideas were downright clever. Photocopying grandma’s tablecloth and using it as wrapping paper. Adorning your tree with beautiful vintage tea cups. Using silver serving pieces to display favorite ornaments.

I could go on and on (31 times), so check it out for yourself. Hopefully you’ll leave as inspired as I did to make the kitchen as festive as it deserves to be. Happy decorating.
