Kitchen Cabinets- Need help deciding what to do with that empty space?

Above Cabinet Decor- Pier 1

Many people wonder what to do with the space above kitchen cabinets. One option is to have us build kitchen cabinets to match the existing ones to fill in that space and add storage. No one will ever know they were added!

If you aren’t ready for new cabinetry, there are countless other options. Of course you want the space to enhance the look of your kitchen and not appear to be a catch all. In our search for ideas we ran across two extreme schools of thought. Interior designer Kirsten Krason offered up her opinion in her blog that she prefered nothing above the cabinetry.  She prefers the clean look and negative space created by leaving that space empty.

However, for many people that space “needs” something for the kitchen to feel complete. Since Pier 1  has plenty of things to fill up spaces, they offer many suggestions.  Their suggestions were much different from Krason’s, so in the end you will have to figure out what look makes you happy.

Here are some tips that we think are worth keeping in mind:

Use larger items, using small items above cabinets will likely look more like clutter than good design. Group items together for impact.

Keeping the color scheme monochromatic will make it less busy looking, while still adding personality.

Consider adding some battery operated LED candles to accentuate the texture of items and add a warm glow. Choose ones with timers or a remote.

Keep in mind that you probably won’t be dusting up there on a weekly basis, so light colored items will show less dust. Let’s face it, even the best display won’t look good if it looks dirty.

Like many design projects it boils down to what makes it feel like home to you. If you like it clean and simple, don’t let anyone convince you that you must put something up there. On the other hand, if you want to display things you love, do so.

In typical Minnesota fashion the calendar says summer is coming to a close and it is sweltering!  Hopefully you have made it to the fair to enjoy our new food picks from last month. We have yet to make it out there, but the cheese curds are calling…
This time of year brings a return to routine for many of us. That routine can also lead to clutter, so we are featuring a project we did that may give you some ideas of how you can better organize your daily routine.

If getting in and out of your house is a bit like navigating an obstacle course, you may want to consider having us design custom storage solutions for you. In the project featured above, the owners needed a place for the usual entryway clutter of jackets, backpacks, shoes, and purses. The solution provides a clean look and ample storage. Each member of the family has their own designated space with additional storage for jackets and a bench to sit on.
We can custom create a solution that works for your family whether you need room for shoulder pads or dog dishes.

In typical Minnesota fashion we’ve experienced a hint of summer and now much cooler temps are back in the forecast. Spring will eventually decide to stick around and undoubtedly in no time at all we will be complaining about the mosquitoes!
We continue be hard at work installing roll outs and remodeling kitchens. It is always gratifying to see people excited about their new installations. Some are more excited than others, in fact, one recent customer proclaimed that her roll out changed her life!

In addition to cabinets and roll outs,we also create custom furniture. Sometimes you may have something in mind, but are unable to find it in the stores. Other times you may like the look of what you see in furniture stores, but be disappointed with the quality of construction.
There is no point in settling for a piece that won’t look, function, or last the way you want it to. Having a piece of furniture custom made for you and your space ensures that both form and function will be perfect.
Above is an example of a dresser, but we also build benches, entertainment centers, tables, and anything else you can dream up.

Spring Is Here! Clean Those Kitchen Cabinets!

Happy first day of spring! We know it doesn’t look or feel like spring, but technically it is. We think it is the perfect weather for some spring cleaning.  Let’s face it, once it is warm outside you aren’t going to want to be inside bonding with your vacuum. Read on for some green cleaning tips.  They are both earth friendly and easy on the pocketbook.

The basic supplies you’ll need to make your own green cleaners include:

  • Distilled white vinegar (sold in the cooking section of most supermarkets)
  • Baking soda
  • Olive oil
  • Borax (sold in a box in the laundry aisle)
  • Liquid castile soap (like Dr. Bronner’s brand, found in most natural foods stores)
  • Essential oils (super concentrated natural plant oils found in natural foods stores, usually in the cosmetics section)
  • Microfiber cleaning cloths
  • Newspaper

Here are a few basic “recipes” and techniques to get you started:

  • Glass: Mix 1/4 cup vinegar with 1 quart of water in a spray bottle. Spray on glass and wipe clean with old newspaper or a lint-free cloth.
  • Countertops and bathroom tile: Mix 2 parts vinegar and 1 part baking soda with 4 parts water. Apply with a sponge, scour, and wipe away.
  • Floors: Mix 4 cups of white distilled vinegar with about a gallon of hot water. If desired, add a few drops of pure peppermint or lemon oil for a pleasant scent. After damp mopping the floors, the smell of vinegar will dissipate quickly, leaving behind only the scent of the oil.
  • Wood furniture: Mix equal parts of lemon juice and olive and oil. Apply a small amount to a cloth, and rub onto the furniture in long, even strokes.
  • Toilet bowl cleaner: Sprinkle a toilet brush with baking soda and scrub away! Occasionally disinfect your toilet by scrubbing with borax instead. Wipe the outside of the toilet clean with straight vinegar.
  • Mold and mildew: Wipe with straight vinegar.
  • Air freshener: Sprinkle essential oil on a cotton ball, and stash it in a corner of the room. If you have kids, make sure it is out of their reach as essential oils are very strong and could irritate their skin. Lavender is a relaxing scent that is great for bedrooms, and cinnamon, clove, and citrus oils are great for the rest of the house. You can stash a few in the car too-try peppermint, which may help you to stay alert.
